Motivating & activating the dentist – gene ral practioner in Oral Oncology Supportive Care
Sixty-four dentists (photo above) attended the Spring Semester Educational Seminar, that began on February 20, 2009. The Seminar will be completed on May 29, 2009.
These Seminars are organized by the Dental School, University of Athens, Dental Oncology Unit, twice a year. The pharmaceutical industry supports the cost, in addition to a registration fee of 50 Euros.
Various oncologist speakers describe chara cteristics of specific cancer patients and other related issues such as cancer-related fatigue, cachexia, systemic complications of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and stem cell transplantation.
Then, groups of 4dentists visit the Dental Oncology Unit and assist in the treatment of cancer patients. The group education is followed by lectures on oral complications, such as mucositis, xerostomia, osteonecrosis, etc. The dental guidelines and protocols to treat cancer patients are presented by colleagues at the Dental School.
The next seminar is planned to start on September 9 and the positions have been already completed.
